Alternatives To Breeding:
There are still a lot of ferrets keepers that think they have to breed their jills every year or she will die. This is not completely true but can happen in curtain curcumstances.
A jill comes into season as soon as the days start to noticably lengthen and will stay in season until mid to late September. There are alternatives....
Take your jill to the vets and have her spayed.. This operation removes her womb and she will never come into season again.
Take your jill to your vet and let her have the "Jill Jab".. This is an injection of hormones which will bring her outof season.. There is a chance that she will come back into season.
Mate her to a vasectomised hob.. Most ferret rescue centers will have one or two and for a small fee you can obtain his services.. Anyone who has a large number of jills should keep a vasectomised hob also called a hoblet.. It can be quite costly to have a hob vasectomised but during the breeding season his sevices will ebcome indespencible.
